The home was bought for him by friends who took up a collection after he retired from public life.

After the death of Mackenzie and his wife, the house changed hands several times, once functioning as a boarding house in the 1920s. In the 1930s the deteriorated house was up for demolition, but was saved by concerned citizens who raised the money to buy it. Eventually, renovations began on the house, and it opened to the public in 1950. The house has a fully functional 19th-century print shop, similar to the one Mackenzie used to publish newspapers. The gallery wing, built in 1967, has changing exhibits. Costumed staff gives demonstrations of 19th century life. The house, courtyard garden, and gallery make for an intimate space for any special event. The Toronto Historical Board further restored it. Today, the City of Toronto Culture Division operates Mackenzie House.

Description: In 1793, John Graves Simcoe built a garrison on the site of what is now Fort York. The original log buildings quickly deteriorated, only to be replaced in the late 1790s by new barracks, 100 metres east of the original site. Later a home was built for the lieutenant governor on the present fort site. From the time of the first garrison, the buildings on the property were either destroyed or fell into disrepair, necessitating rebuilding. Most of the buildings date from 1813, after barracks and other buildings were burned by the Americans in the War of 1812 (which actually ended in December, 1814). Fort York has been fortified since on several occasions.

This designated National Historical Site is located on three hectares (seven acres) of land in the centre of the city. Costumed staff gives period demonstrations.

Chinese immigrants have long settled in the area behind City Hall on Dundas W., but the Chinese district has mushroomed since 1980, when new immigrants began commercializing the area to the west. It's the place to go to buy medicinal herbs, cheap sunglasses, shoes and fruit and vegetables. In the summer, it's teeming with tourists, area residents, bargain-hunting shoppers and funky folk. Take your pick of restaurants for a dose of authentic Chinese food after a night out on the town -- many are open 24 hours. In the winter the Chinatown Centre, at 222 Spadina Ave., is the place to hang, with all varieties of Chinese-made clothing, accessories, home decor items and toys available. In the food court, sample yummy Oriental fast-food.

On the newly refurbished Spadina Ave., check out the outdoor sculptures of dragons and other Chinese mythical figures mounted atop pillars.

Website: www.childrensownmuseum.org

Description: The Children's Own Museum (COM) is a unique hands-on experience, Toronto's first children's museum. COM has been designed to engage the imagination of children aged two to eight, providing a safe, non-judgmental space where they can explore different activities, learn together and gain an understanding of themselves and the world around them.

This is a new kind of place to play and learn. Unlike most museums, you don't walk along looking at displays. Here children learn by hands-on experience. One publicist describes it as a giant playhouse where kids can create a neighbourhood of their own. The picket fence-enclosed plaza out front will accommodate outdoor activities that change with the seasons. In the lobby, large murals created by children dominate the space. Even the stairwell to the main gallery involves interactive games.

The second floor is home to a "neighbourhood" youngsters can make into what they want, through active participation. They can visit the cafe as a customer or take a shift behind the counter. They might move into the house at the end of Main Street, or start a business. Supplies can be selected at the hardware store or furniture shop. Signs can be changed on buildings and performances put on at the local theatre. There is an art and junk workshop where sculpting, painting and inventing are encouraged. At the construction site, budding engineers and builders can build their own complexes. For both adults and children, quiet spaces have been created for reading and research.

Craftspeople and workers wearing period costumes demonstrate skills such as open-hearth cooking, bread-making, looming, milling, blacksmithing, sewing, printing and more.
