WELCOME RECEPTION LECTURE

Graeme Magor, B.Sc., M.D., Dir. Occupational Health & Safety
Lynda Magor, B.A, B.Ed.

TITLE: "You're going where for how long?!" - Planning for A Year Alone in the Arctic

ABSTRACT: During 1999-2000 Lynda and Graeme led the Otto Sverdrup Centennial Expedition which over-wintered in isolation in the Canadian arctic. To commemorate Sverdrup's discoveries in the Canadian High Arctic a century ago, an international expedition team (comprised of 3 couples and the Magors' then 2 year old daughter Keziah) sailed from Norway in June of 1999 and overwintered in Hourglass Bay on Ellesmere Island. The sun set on October 30, not to rise again until mid February of the following year! Psychology consultants to NASA followed the group`s coping strategies throughout as a study analog for interplanetary missions of the future.

Lynda and Graeme will share their story of this adventurous year on ice. They will reflect also on their struggles over the preceding years to juggle the necessary elements of contingency planning, logistics coordination, and budgetary restraint so as to be ready at the starting line in Oslo on the appointed departure date.

How did they anticipate and plan for all that might transpire? What about polar bears? What about each other! And what to do with a lone toddler throughout an endless winter?

[see also www.sverdrup2000.org]

BIOGRAPHY: Graeme and Lynda Magor live with daughters Keziah (5) and Kira (2) in the country near Markdale, Ontario two hours north of Toronto.

Graeme studied medicine at McGill University and subsequently was certified in family medicine as well as occupational health and safety at McMaster University. He provides occupational and employee health services in a number of industrial settings. Over the past 20 years, Graeme has been exploring Canada's eastern arctic - traveling these remote and dramatic islands by sled and ski.

Lynda studied physical education and teaching at the University of Western Ontario and Nipissing University respectively. She taught for a number of years in Victoria, B.C. with particular interests including outdoor education and coaching rowers and runners. Like Graeme, she has several times been a member of Canada's age group national triathlon team. In 1995 Lynda and Graeme hitched up to the same sled in the High Arctic and have not looked back since!

Keynote Speaker: Sid Katz

TITLE: "Selling Science EH&S: Confessions of a PI"

ABSTRACT: Tighter EH&S regulations are sometimes seen as time-consuming and a nuisance to busy investigators yet have contributed greatly to the health and well being of researchers. Sid Katz describes how things have changed in the 27 years he has been a PI and what lies ahead. A very lively presentation and discussion is expected.

BIOGRAPHY: Sid Katz is a Professor of Pharmacology in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. His main research interests are cell regulation and ion transport, including the role of protein kinesis in health and disease. He is also a Principal Investigator in the highly successful Canadian Networks of Centres of Excellence Programme which is committed to taking research ideas and turning them into technological advances for the Canadian and international marketplace. He has published in excess of 150 research monographs, reviews and conference presentations and has trained over 35 MSc & PhD students and Postdoctoral Fellows and lectured in more than 50 Universities and Institutes around the world.

During the past 15 years, Dr. Katz has spent a considerable portion of his time promoting science to the public. He is an award-winning science communicator with a broad career in radio, television and print journalism including health/science columnist on CBC radio and medical specialist on the CTV National News.

Dr. Katz is also very involved in promoting science education for elementary and high school children. In this latter role he has served as Executive Director of Science World in British Columbia and Director General and CEO of the Ontario Science Centre. He has also helped create numerous educational programs to complement the formal science education curriculum in the schools, including the world's first Internet science magazine, The Branium, which is now in over 10,000 schools in Canada and the U.S.

Dr. Katz has won a number of awards for his science awareness and science education activities. These include the Gordon Kaplan Award from the Canadian Federation of Biological Societies (1991), the Eve Savory Award from the Science Council of British Columbia (1992), the McNeil Medal from the Royal Society of Canada (1993) and the Sandford Fleming Award of the Royal Canadian Institute (1998). In 2000, he was given the Janssen-Ortho Award for career achievement in pharmaceutical research, and has been named a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the Government of Canada.

Dr. Katz lives in Vancouver and is currently dividing his time between his research laboratory at the University of British Columbia and numerous science awareness and science education initiatives.
