COSTI, a social service agency geared toward immigrants, initiated a project intended to preserve the legacy of the five Italian workers who died in the Hoggs Hollow disaster of March 17, 1960; they created a monument which commemorates immigrant communities who paved the way for safer and more humane work environments. Their legacy will live on through a quilt designed by local visual artist Laurie Swim with a great deal of help from numerous family members of the victims along with other volunteers from the community. The permanent art memorial is expected to be displayed at the York Mills subway station on the Young St. Subway Line. This location is just a few meters from the original disaster.
April 28 National Day of Mourning is also known as Workers Memorial Day.
