ASPLUNDH AERIAL LIFTS: Models LR-40, LR-42, LR-45, LR-50, LRII-45, LRII-50 Serial Nos. 86-8600 through 91-0138 Produced by: Construction Health and Safety Program, Ministry of Labour, Alert 11/0695 ISSN 1195-5228 The Ministry of Labour recently investigated an accident that involved the failure of the upper boom drive cables of an aerial lift device produced by Asplundh Manufacturing. In 1992 Asplundh issued Product Bulletins #120 and #121. These warned owners of the aerial lifts specified above that they needed to replace certain parts. The information was widely circulated, but it may not have reached some affected parties. These models are equipped with a Dukes operating valve at the bucket controls. The spool for this valve creates elevated pressures within the upper boom cylinders that are greater than required for normal operations. These pressures cause internal damage to the drive cables and the dropping of the upper boom section. The spool can be identified by the letter "A" stamped on its outside at the handle end. Any owner of one of these aerial lifts that is equipped with a Dukes valve should make sure that both the spool and the drive cables are replaced in accordance with the manufacturer's Product Bulletins #120 and #121.
