Be Proactive with your Program
Review your workplace violence prevention measures
Violence in the workplace: not always the easiest topic to address, but you did it. You are a human resources manager who is also responsible for the health and safety at an office that deals with the public and handles cash. You have a created a good policy that is supported by both employees and management. You have taken steps to improve the worksite itself by adding security cameras, mirrors, and lighting. You have a buddy system for anyone leaving the building after 9:00 pm. Staff are interested, and make comments or suggestions on a regular basis. But is your job finished? Not yet.
So, what's next? It's time for your annual review of the violence prevention program. All health and safety programs are made better through regular review and continual improvement. A key step during a program review consists of looking at your data.
- Have there been incidents when employees have experienced or been threatened with physical violence?
- Have there been incidents when employees have experienced verbal abuse (shouted at, obscene language, threats, or obscene phone calls)?
In your review, you learn that there have been incidents where your employees have been shouted at or have had threats made against them and the organization. While this behaviour is often brushed off as "part of the day", you wonder if something can be done to help prevent or reduce these incidents.
Here's where CCOHS can help. Our new e-course on Dealing with Difficult and Hostile Customers provides training on how to handle those customers who become argumentive or when these hostile situations escalate. Packed with videos, this course literally shows you that it's not just what you say, but how you say it that can stop a bad situation from getting worse. The course covers how to recognize difficult situations, how to use rapport building techniques, and the role of positive communication.
This e-course complements the Violence in the Workplace Prevention Guide, which provides ideas for further developing your prevention program, and covers topics such as warning signs, personal safety, workplace design, and travel.
Regularly reviewing every prevention program is necessary to ensure they reflect and respond to the current status of your workplace. Continue to be proactive with your program.

Get the Real Deal on Mould, Spores and More
Watch the recorded webinar and earn points
Mould is everywhere, including the workplace, and for some people the inhalation of mould or spores can lead to health problems or make certain health conditions worse. In addition, many of these moulds make by-products that can be toxic to humans. These toxins can slowly wear down the immune system and can lead to allergic or respiratory problems.
Learn to manage and avoid mould issues in the workplace by watching the latest recorded webinar from CCOHS, Mould, Spores and More: The Real Deal.
In this 90-minute session, Chris Liddy, Occupational Health and Safety Specialist at CCOHS, presents an understanding of the basic issues surrounding mould in the workplace and includes an overview of the general principles and approaches used to manage the issue effectively. Discussion on how to ensure effective communication between stakeholders is included.
This webinar also includes real world examples so that workplaces without experience in this issue can interact successfully with professionals and address a mould problem when it arises in the workplace.
The $69 registration fee includes access to view the webinar anytime, a copy of the presentation slides, as well as qualification for certification maintenance points from ABIH, CRBOH and OKA.

CCOHS and iHR Solutions have partnered to create and develop a new set of e-courses to help companies and workers handle the difficulties and issues that arise when human interactions go wrong.
Dealing with Difficult or Hostile Customers
Dealing with the general public on a daily basis normally involves minimum stress. However, there may be times when customer or client concerns escalate into a stressful or potentially explosive situation, for both the staff and the customer. Gain an understanding of the stresses and pressures that exist when dealing with customers who are volatile or hostile in this hour-long e-course.
You will develop a broad skill set to cope with these potential interactions. In addition, you'll learn practical communication and coping techniques to handle the situation and enhance your personal performance.
Dealing with Robbery
This course provides managers, supervisors and workers with the mental and practical skills to successfully deal with a robbery incident. Identify different types of robberies, understand the psychological aspects involved, and discover advice and techniques that can be used to defuse both soft and hard robberies. You'll also learn about post-robbery procedures, from the practical aspects to the emotional aftermath.
Dealing with a Hostage Situation
Although a hostage situation is unlikely, the possibility cannot be discounted and the impact to the individual and company can be high. This course provides management at any facility, store or branch, with the knowledge and practical skills to deal with a short-term hostage event. The course will look at the possible background to such an event, the psychological pressures on all concerned, the key requirement and skills of rapport building, and the resolution of such an incident.

To assist you in tracking changes to this report from the previous month, the new or amended text will appear in purple. Archive reports are also available.
Legislation Notification Service
Available exclusively for Web subscribers of the Canadian enviroOSH Legislation Service, this online tool allows you to track changes to specific documents (Acts, Regulations, Codes, Guides, and Standards) found in the Service. Receive an automatic e-mail when a change occurs to documents that you have marked for tracking. Legislative Updates by RSS
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication and it's an easy and timely way for you to get new website content delivered automatically to you. With CCOHS, you can stay on top of legislation changes through a special RSS feed that lets you know when new content has been added or when it has been amended.
Simply subscribe to the Canadian enviroOSH Legislation RSS feed, and new updates are automatically fed to your favorite RSS reader or Web browser. The RSS feed contains a headline, summary and a link back to the full document on the CCOHS website. And if you're a Canadian enviroOSH Legislation Web subscriber, you can access the full document on the CCOHS website. Again, any changes to the document are marked in purple text for your convenience.
