When it comes to workplace health and safety, there is a world of information. So in this issue we've brought some of these resources closer to you: including e-courses, webinars, labelling software, and our new Web-based hazard planning tool, OSH Essentials.
Build your plan to take action on workplace hazards
CCOHS introduces OSH Essentials hazard planning tool
In every workplace there are hazards - a potential source of injury, illness, or damage which can cause harm to your employees, the equipment around them, or the environment in which they work. Workplace hazards can come from a wide range of sources, with varying degrees of associated risk.
To help you manage the risks of hazards in your workplace, CCOHS has created OSH Essentials™, a new online tool to build a hazard management plan specific to your workplace.
With interactive features and practical information, OSH Essentials allows you to easily navigate a step-by-step process to help you identify, assess and control the hazards in your workplace. Checklists guide you through the steps of reviewing workplace activities, identifying potential and existing hazards, and learning relevant legislation by key sections. Choose from suggested control measures to create your final action plan that will help address the risks in your workplace.
Ten OSH Essentials topics are available, with more currently in the works:
Each OSH Essentials topic includes a summary and detailed list of relevant federal, provincial and territorial legislation, with access the text of key sections. Two options are available to purchase that will suit your needs: either federal plus one jurisdiction, or federal plus all jurisdictions.
When you purchase an OSH Essentials topic, you instantly gain access to it over the web and for the next 30 days. All OSH Essentials content is developed and reviewed by CCOHS' team of technical specialists.

Put a Label on it
Online tool for workplace label creation now available
Are all your chemicals labelled according to the regulations? Have you ever had to replace a damaged WHMIS or OSHA supplier label?
Labels are an important component of chemical hazard communication because they serve as a key reminder for workers of the product's hazards and that they need to take appropriate precautions to work safely with the product. Inadequate labelling of containers of hazardous chemicals is a common deficiency on compliance audits.
Make workplace labelling quick and accurate by using the web-based CANLabel labelling software with your adhesive labels. To improve compliance, keep the adhesive labels close to a computer in the lab or chemical storage area where chemicals are dispensed, to quickly create compliant labels when and where you need them.
Labelling a chemical product in compliance with WHMIS or OSHA regulations is easily done using CANLabel, for both employers writing workplace container labels, and for suppliers creating supplier labels. Since it recommends content based on the hazards of your product, you can select the right label content that you really need to protect workers, edit and customize your content, and print your unique label in minutes.
CANLabel works with off-the-shelf adhesive labels, plus it prepares French and Spanish translations in a snap. Try it for yourself - a demo version of CANLabel is free to try, and subscriptions start from only $100.

Make Sense of Scents in the Workplace
Tools to move to a scent-free workplace
Scents are found in countless products that we use every day including soaps, detergents, household cleaners and personal care products such as shampoo, body wash and aftershave. And although these products may smell pleasant, for your coworker with scent sensitivities, they may come with unpleasant health effects.
The person wearing scents can be affected by them as well as anyone they come into contact with. This can create a challenge in the workplace where people interact or sit close to one another. Some workplaces promote the "arm's length" rule: that no scent should be detectable at more than an arm's length from the individual.
Others are going one step further and adopting a scent-free policy for their workplace. Planning to make the transition? CCOHS has tools to help:

- Webinar: Learn about the issue of scent sensitivities
Watch this free thirty minute webinar about scent sensitivities and the challenges faced in the workplace. - Poster: Raise awareness of scent sensitivities
Post this Air Aware poster and inform your employees about the issue of scent sensitivities and help them understand how fragrances can impact the health of their coworkers. Get everyone on the same page with this important workplace health issue. - Poster: Designate areas or your building as "scent-free"
Post this Scent-Free Zone poster in work areas or buildings designated as "fragrance-free" as a reminder to employees and visitors. It clearly advises people not to wear perfume, cologne, aftershave and other fragrances, and to use unscented personal care products. - Button: Spread the message
Provide your employees with buttons that let them show their support for a fragrance-free environment, by declaring, "I'm air aware". - Sample: Scent-Free Policy
Here's a sample scent-free policy you can use as a starting point, keeping in mind that your policy should be based on the health concerns of your employees, and that the policy must also apply uniformly throughout the company.
Ask for everyone's assistance in maintaining a fragrance-free workplace - so that all may be able to breathe easy.
