Through its services and products, CCOHS advances health and safety in Canadian workplaces, and the physical and mental well-being of workers in Canada.

The Education Services Unit provides a high quality and dependable service to fulfill the health and safety related education needs of Canadian workplace participants through education via online courses (e-Learning).

The e-Learning Graphics/Animation Designer contributes to the work of the Service Unit by:

Duties

    • Video, Animations, and Interactive Multimedia Using video editing and animation software, creates animations, videos, graphic assets, and interactive multimedia for use in e-Learning courses across multiple platforms. Produces immersive content pieces using new media technologies (video, voice-over, animation, software simulation, etc.). Designs, develops, and refines animations, multimedia, and video content for e-Learning courses. Ensures all developed content reflects universal design and accessibility guidelines. (70 %)
    • Images and illustrations Collaborates with the e-Learning Quality Assurance and Production Coordinators, e-Course Builders, and other staff as assigned on creating images, multimedia, animations, and video projects. (25%)
    • Other related duties as required. (5%)

Scope of Position

  • The position reports to the Manager, Education Services Unit. The position may also work closely with the Manager, Public Health Partnership Service Unit whose team will be providing content to be developed into e-courses.
  • The e-Learning Graphics/Animation Designer works closely with the e-Learning Quality Assurance and Production Coordinators, e-Course Builders, Graphics Team, and members of the Public Health Partnership and Client Services/Technical Services Service Units.
  • The incumbent is expected to participate in the planning of the Service Unit or Team activities, to ensure that they play an active part in achieving the goals without causing work overload or imposing conflicting demands, including deadlines. They must adjust to frequently changing priorities and deadlines and notify their Service Unit Manager and team lead(s) should time constraints or other challenges arise that require resolution.
  • The incumbent creates custom graphic assets, animations, multimedia, and video content for e-Learning courses.

Know-How

  • The position will create a range of interactive animations and videos to be used in e-Learning courses, factoring in the required form and navigation. The incumbent must have thorough knowledge of a wide range of software, including image editing (e.g. Adobe Photoshop), illustration (e.g. Adobe Illustrator), animation (e.g. Adobe Animate), video editing (e.g. Adobe Premiere), scanning software, asset management (Adobe CC Libraries), PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat. The incumbent must have character animation and video editing skills to create immersive, engaging content using a variety of methods and tools.
  • The position requires creativity in conceptualizing content and data to produce visual interpretations (e.g. with infographics and icons). The incumbent must possess a strong knowledge of photography, illustration, video skills and editing of related assets, as well as a good understanding of current digital tools, trends, and equipment. The position also requires strong knowledge of colour theory, composition, and typography as well as computer illustration methods, design techniques, printing techniques, and e-Learning storyboarding.
  • The incumbent must have good knowledge of e-Learning development software systems (e.g. Articulate Storyline 360) and voiceover generating technology (e.g. Amazon Polly), including their capabilities and limitations, formatting options and techniques for displaying content to develop interactive, engaging and accessible e-courses. The position requires the incumbent to have strong knowledge of specific aspects of the e-Learning development software such as the knowledge to integrate the desired assets (e.g. interactive animation) into an e-Learning course.
  • The position requires basic knowledge of instructional design and development best practices (both form and function) and universal design principles to develop courses, ensuring the creation of engaging and creative courses. Basic knowledge and experience with integrating multimedia content within a learning management system is desired.
  • The incumbent is required to thoroughly learn and apply the standard operating procedures for e-Learning development used by the Service Unit, including how to implement accessibility requirements (WCAG2.0) into e-Learning courses in development. The incumbent is required to possess sound knowledge and experience in applying accessibility standards (e.g. WCAG 2.0) in their asset development. The position also requires basic knowledge with copyright laws related to media.
  • Strong organizational skills are required to ensure that multiple e-Learning assets are delivered within their specified timelines. The incumbent must have excellent accuracy and attention to detail; the skills and knowledge to: conduct quality assurance of their work, proofreading and troubleshooting, organize jobs, work closely with others and communicate effectively.
  • The incumbent will interact with a variety of internal clients requiring strong interpersonal skills.
  • The ability to work with text in both official languages (English and French) is essential.

Problem-Solving

The incumbent

  • researches, develops and recommends best format, form and design to achieve specific objectives;
  • synthesizes numeric and textual information to create interpretive visuals such as infographics and animations;
  • adapts existing and creates new materials to meet specific client needs, often within short timeframes (e.g. converting and adapting images and graphics to be accessible);
  • monitors and investigates trends and new approaches in graphics, communications, social media imagery, e-Learning design and other communications to help ensure CCOHS is innovating and continuously improving in this area;
  • reflects the diversity of the population of Canada in all creative assets they produce.

Accountability

The incumbent is responsible for the successful performance and continuous improvement of:

  • creating and integrating animations, videos and graphical assets into e-Learning courses as assigned;
  • ensuring the designs communicate the message and purpose of the course/content, adhering to CCOHS’ house style and branding, or to course end-use specifications/ requirements;
  • ensuring the finished products meet quality standards;
  • ensuring that relevant organizational/governmental policies and processes are followed;
  • ensuring there is representation of the diverse population of Canada in all of their visual creations;
  • following web accessibility guidelines to ensure that CCOHS materials, images, information, programs and services are available barrier-free to all;
  • providing recommendations on graphical-related features and actively participates in course development; and
  • participating in the activities of relevant Service Units and Project Teams by providing input and new suggestions on processes, procedures, and product development.

Working Conditions

  • Physical Effort: The employee works at a computer (keyboarding and mousing to read and reply to e-mail, prepare reports, review information, etc.) for the majority of the workday. The work is interspersed with non-computer-based activity, such as reading, thinking, proof-reading, filing. The employee has some control over the workload and can get up, stretch, and walk on a regular basis. Some stooping and lifting (or handling of light material) may be required.
  • Physical Environment: The employee works at a desk and/or a computer workstation with a keyboard and a mouse for the majority of the workday. The workstation and desk are ergonomically set up with a wrist rest, mouse rest, document holder, task lamp, as required. The lighting meets standards and there are adjustable blinds on the windows as required. The building environmental controls meet general office requirements. A high volume of production work and precision is required in this position. There is a potential for RMI during heavy production times on tight deadlines unless safe work procedures outlined are followed. Open cubicle settings do not always provide the quiet environment needed for creative development.
  • Sensory Attention: Concentration is required due to the detailed, creative nature of the work (technical illustration, typography, text editing, etc.).
  • Mental Stress: There are multiple production schedules to be met on a regular basis. Priorities and deadlines change frequently; priorities are set by others.

Specifications

  • Post-secondary education in multimedia or instructional design.
  • At least three years of experience as a multimedia designer, animation designer, or an instructional designer with extensive experience developing interactive multimedia learning objects, capturing and editing video in support of online learning.
  • Basic knowledge of e-Learning design and development (both form and function) and design fundamentals.
  • Strong knowledge and experience with use of multimedia development tools including Articulate Storyline 360, Adobe Premiere, or equivalent.
  • Strong knowledge and use of multimedia editing software such as Photoshop and Adobe Create Suite software including: Photoshop, Illustrator, Animate, Adobe Acrobat (accessible, functional forms), Adobe Creative Cloud, CC Libraries asset management) and Spark video editing.
  • Experience with video capture and editing for the web.
  • Experience applying and sound knowledge of accessibility standards (e.g. WCAG 2.0)
  • Working knowledge of copyright laws related to media.
  • Experience integrating multimedia content within a learning management system is preferred.
  • Experience applying best practices in multimedia content development for online courses.
  • Proficiency in MS Word (accessibility) and PowerPoint.
  • Photography, illustration, video skills and editing are required, as well as a good understanding of current digital tools, trends, and equipment.
  • Thorough knowledge in developing creative, professional, responsive, and engaging designs delivered across multiple devices and platforms and devices.
  • Technical skills for design, print, web production and motion graphics for web / mobile devices.
  • Excellent accuracy and attention to detail, quality assurance, proofreading and troubleshooting and ability to organize jobs, work closely with others and communicate effectively in a team atmosphere is required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational/project management skills.
  • The ability to work with content in official languages (English, French) is required.
  • The ability to communicate in both official languages is an asset.

Salary

Within the range of

$68,220 to $87,833 (CCOHS-08) per annum.
