Description

Vessel stability is an important part of seaworthiness. It is your actions and your decisions that will keep your vessel safe. Even if your vessel is considered structurally safe and complies with all the rules, poor operational decisions can cause it to capsize.

This course introduces the principles of stability for small fishing vessels operating in Canadian waters. You will learn about the factors that can affect vessel stability, including weight distribution, buoyancy and centre of gravity. You will also learn how to assess and maintain stability and to ensure the safe navigation and operation of small vessels.

Topics include:

  • Centre of gravity and centre of buoyancy
  • Righting lever and GZ curve
  • Tender and stiff vessels
  • Stability assessments
  • Stability booklets
  • Free surface effect
  • The dangers of overloading
  • Trawling, dredging and towing operations
  • Risks from heavy seas
  • The importance of written procedures

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Describe the importance of having a stable vessel
  • Explain why a vessel floats
  • Explain how the forces of gravity and buoyancy act on a vessel
  • Summarize the contents of a stability booklet
  • Outline the stability requirements for different sizes of vessels
  • Identify who can do a stability assessment on a vessel
  • List the steps of a roll period test
  • Identify conditions that can impact a vessel’s stability
  • Explain how to prepare for a fishing trip
  • Describe how to assess potential impacts on your vessel’s stability

Average time to complete this course is approximately 1.5 hours
