Get guidance on how to protect workers from exposure to hazardous chemicals.
Establishing strategies to protect workers from harmful exposures to hazardous chemicals is essential to a healthy and safe workplace. This 100-page manual provides guidance and resources to help you identify, assess and control hazards during the storage, handling and use of hazardous chemicals in the workplace.
This manual will help you:
This manual discusses health hazards and control measures associated with exposure to chemicals. It includes guidance on how to effectively protect workers from chemical hazards using the hierarchy of controls: elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment.
It does not discuss physical hazards such as flammability or explosion hazards, nor does it address infection control measures for biological hazards, physical agents, or the transportation of hazardous substances.
NOTE: This manual provides general guidance. It does not provide information about chemical-specific controls to reduce exposure to workers. Many factors can contribute to harmful exposures to chemicals. You may need to consult with subject matter experts, such as health and safety professionals and occupational hygienists, to interpret and apply the guidance in this document.
Any workplace where there is a potential risk for worker exposure to hazardous chemicals will benefit from this manual. It is recommended for employers, owners, managers, supervisors, workers, health and safety committees and representatives, chemical management teams, health and safety specialists, occupational hygienists, engineers, and other technical specialists.
