During the summer severe weather season in Canada (the season typically runs from late April to early October), about 60 to 80 tornadoes and hundreds of damaging thunderstorms occur. The majority of these storms occur in the Prairies, Ontario and Southern Quebec but most parts of the country can experience these types of severe weather. The presentation discusses the Watch/Warning system used by Environment Canada to provide advance notice to the Canadian public of these significant storms and the safety precautions to take to avoid injury. The presentation will also focus on lightning safety since by definition all thunderstorms, not just those deemed damaging or severe, have lightning associated with them.
